The Making of A Diamond

I will be the guest speaker for The Making Of A Diamond podcast with Hope Melton on May 14, 2022, at 7:30 pm EST. Please tune in to hear about my newest publication Baltimore Imprint. After observing the podcast title and falling in love with it, I thought about the irony regarding the title and how it corresponds with my story. The Baltimore Imprint is a non-fiction book that highlights my experiences. The book touches on my journey of teen motherhood, single motherhood, partner abuse, anxiety, doubt, trauma, fear, and how I overcame my unfortunate experiences. Science conveys to us that the process of diamond formulation involves pressure. Diamonds are formed when carbon deposits found within the earth's surface are subjected to high-temperature changes and pressure. It is intriguing to see how an excruciating developmental process can give birth to such a beautiful object. I never stopped to assess how the developmental process for humans can often be symmetrical to the developmental process of a diamond.

Often life pressures us to feel overwhelmed and lost because we don't see the bigger picture formulated during our adverse experiences. Our human character traits and flaws only allow us to dissect and understand what lies at the surface. Forcing us to become reflections of the "what is" instead of evolving to become reflections of "what will be." This limited understanding and faith allows us to be inpatient and, at times inaccurate in our approach to our dreams and future because we lack the proper knowledge that "the pressure" is a core component of the process. Why is it that we lack this fundamental understanding during our process? If a stone can sit for days, months, or years waiting to be transformed into a beautiful object, why can't we?

Life often throws us curveballs that figuratively transform our beings. Our temperatures begin to elevate more and more as the pressure of the world continues to push its weight up against us. Making us question why our loads consist of the things they do. It isn't until we begin to gain relief that we can observe the Diamonds we have become due to the merger of chaos and time. As a young mother and high school dropout, I would have never imagined that the pressure I endured would have led me to the spaces it did. I never believed that I could overcome all the things that I did. I wrote Baltimore Imprint because I want young people to understand life is a full-circle experience. When you're in the midst of adversity, you never feel there is a purpose for maltreatments and struggles. I hope everyone who reads this story will come to the understanding that healing and elevation is a choice. It doesn't matter where you start in life; you can change any situation with faith, determination, and resilience. I hope my accounts will help inspire all readers to grow, become the best version of themselves, and face adversity head-on. Next time life throws you a curveball, and you feel your temperature elevating due to life’s pressure, I hope you realize that you are a diamond and pressure is a part of the process!
